My whole life I've dreaded going outside. I like reading a book in a hammock as much as the next person, but I'm not into most outdoor activities. I'm sure my family thought I was being difficult when they wanted to camp, have bonfires, and play outside for hours on end. Ok, maybe I was a tiny bit difficult, but the biggest reason has always been mosquitoes!
Most of my elementary school pictures show mosquito bites on my face. I would get so many my cousins would make fun of me, and even connected all of them with a pen once. (Between the bug bites and freckles I was a hot mess.) Mosquitoes are drawn to me, and it wouldn't take long to be covered in bites. They'd swell and itch for days. My poor daughter is exactly the same way (including the freckles), and I've never found anything to combat them.
When I realized essential oils could really impact all sorts of areas of our lives, a natural bug spray jumped up high on my #istheresanoilforthat list! I found a basic recipe, tweaked it just a little bit, and whipped it up in less than 5 minutes.
Then the real test - our little family set out on a daytrip to Tallulah Gorge in northeast Georgia. (If you're in this part of the country, I highly recommend it. There are easy trails for non-outdoorsy types like me, as well as "real" hiking, repelling, and kayaking. It was beautiful!)
It worked!!! We were outside for HOURS. No bites on any of us! These oils never cease to amaze me!
I know!! You need the recipe, now, don't you?
- In a 2 oz spray bottle
- -mix 1 oz witch hazel (rubbing alcohol or vodka work too)
- -with 2 drops of Young Living Thieves Essential Oil
- -2 drops of Young Living Purification Essential Oil
- - 2 drops of Young Living Peppermint Essential Oil
- -2 drops of Young Living Lemon Essential Oil
- -top your bottle with water
- Shake before using!
I don't know that I'll ever be considered "outdoorsy" but I'm definitely not dreading it this summer!
